Day 9: Favorite Platonic/Familial Relationship: The Wanijima Family
The Gazelle arc made me see Kaito in a different light, I already loved the man before it but I had more respect for him after it. The extreme care he took in Gazelle made my heart do flips, thinking about it now makes me want to cry. He tried everything in his power to keep her alive and them together. In which you just can’t blame him for doing what he did, he loved her with everything he had, so risking it all was completely worth it. The love wasn’t one sided though, Gazelle loved and cared about him too. She was even afraid to run away with him because she didn’t want to danger his life any further. Eventually this happiness was bound to end terrible, and that’s when Gazelle took her own life. This all taking action right in front of Kaito. Just picture how he was feeling, witnessing that, not being able to protect her. That’s why Kaito has a career in law enforcement now, he wanted to fight against all damages that ATs could cause. And then his life changed for the second time, when Akito was sent to his door. He learned that Gazelle’s body was retrieved by Dr. Minami and that he revived the baby. This is when Kaito felt like he had another reason to move on. Besides with Lind in the picture, it’s kinda like Gazelle never left his side. So at least he can still have one personality to remind him of his past love.
At first I too thought Kaito was an asshole when it came to Akito/Agito, considering he kept them in a cage. The only touching moment they had back then was when he pretended he didn’t see Akito and revealed where his checkbook was. After reading the Gazelle arc, you learn that Kaito didn’t cage them up to punish them or use them as a weapon forever.. no not at all, not even close, he just feared he’d lose something precious to him again. He only wanted to protect his son. Though everything about Kaito and Akito/Agito was rather weird at first (considering they thought he was their brother) he really was just an overprotective dad in the end. Knowing the back story now every time I reread the chapters with them in it I find it a little more touching knowing why Kaito’s the way he is.
