Dead!Park Character Concept 1: Craig Tucker

Inspired by The Walking Dead’s character Shane, Craig, a once normal 20 year old has been hardened by the beginning of the Walker epidemic. Good friends with Stan in high school, he’s forced to abandon Stan after an unfortunate car wreck leaves his friend in a coma in a city full of walkers. He takes it upon himself to lead his group of friends away and care for them.

He wears the tags of his father and sister, both ex army, both casualties beneath the walker’s hands. He still has night terrors from watching Ruby being torn to shreds.

Upon having been nearly killed by having the strings of his favorite hat tugged forward by a walker and dragging him with, Craig chose a less dangerous head accessory.

He’s not handling Stan receiving all the group’s attention and favor well.

Dead!Park Character Concept 3: Stan Marsh

Inspired by the Walking Dead’s character Rick, Stan was going down a destructive path before the deadly car crash that put him in a coma. A heavy drinker and neglecting of his fiancee, Wendy, Stan was unsure of where his life was going after his friends graduated high school and left him to rot as a struggling musician/part time employee.

While enjoying being in a leading position, Stan was not necessarily ready to lead a group against a zombie invasion after being found in a hospital surrounded by walkers and taken to a group of his old friends and coincidentally, Wendy.

Stan has no idea where the rest of his family is and isn’t too trusting of anyone at the moment. Where is Kyle?

Given their extreme vulnerability, the vastness of city space, the dangers posed by traffic, suspicion of terrorism, and the possibility that no one would be interested in helping a lost little robot, I initially conceived the Tweenbots as disposable creatures which were more likely to struggle and die in the city than to reach their destination. Because I built them with minimal technology, I had no way of tracking the Tweenbot’s progress, and so I set out on the first test with a video camera hidden in my purse. I placed the Tweenbot down on the sidewalk, and walked far enough away that I would not be observed as the Tweenbot––a smiling 10-inch tall cardboard missionary––bumped along towards his inevitable fate.

The results were unexpected. Over the course of the following months, throughout numerous missions, the Tweenbots were successful in rolling from their start point to their far-away destination assisted only by strangers. Every time the robot got caught under a park bench, ground futilely against a curb, or became trapped in a pothole, some passerby would always rescue it and send it toward its goal. Never once was a Tweenbot lost or damaged. Often, people would ignore the instructions to aim the Tweenbot in the “right” direction, if that direction meant sending the robot into a perilous situation. One man turned the robot back in the direction from which it had just come, saying out loud to the Tweenbot, “You can’t go that way, it’s toward the road.”

The Tweenbot’s unexpected presence in the city created an unfolding narrative that spoke not simply to the vastness of city space and to the journey of a human-assisted robot, but also to the power of a simple technological object to create a complex network powered by human intelligence and asynchronous interactions. But of more interest to me, was the fact that this ad-hoc crowdsourcing was driven primarily by human empathy for an anthropomorphized object. The journey the Tweenbots take each time they are released in the city becomes a story of people’s willingness to engage with a creature that mirrors human characteristics of vulnerability, of being lost, and of having intention without the means of achieving its goal alone. As each encounter with a helpful pedestrian takes the robot one step closer to attaining it’s destination, the significance of our random discoveries and individual actions accumulates into a story about a vast space made small by an even smaller robot.

The batfamily is filled with ugly criers.

Like you know how there are people who manage to still look dignified when they’re full-on crying? They are not that.

Oh gosh like Dick is the worst of the worst his face gets red and scrunched up and there’s all these liquids coming out of all these orifices and you kind of want to hug him but like you don’t want to touch him.

Tim is marginally better, he’s, like, less than 1% better, and only because he doesn’t go around trying to cuddle everyone with his gross sticky crying hands.

Cass’ lip wobbles and you think it’s going to be pretty girl crying where she sobs into your shoulder and you soothe her with tea and French movies but um no she faked your ass out SHE SOBS LIKE A TWELVE YEAR OLD BOY IT’S AN EAR-PIERCING NIGHTMARE. She’s like an anime character her tears jump away from her eyes like they’re fountains and jesus holy hell.

Steph is like the personification of gross sobbing she hiccups and her nose runs and her face pinches up and she’s trying to look tough bless her but it’s failing.

You’d think Jason would have manly tears of toughness where tears fall on a blank face but um no honey you haven’t seen Jason crying yet.

OH MY GOD HE’S LIKE A GOLDFISH HIS EYES GET REALLY WIDE AND GLASSY AND HIS MOUTH JUST GAPS OPEN AND SHUT IT’S MEDICALLY FASCINATING.

AND HE MAKES THESE NOISESLIKE WHOA.
